According to U.S. officials, the number "86" is sometimes used in slang to mean "eliminate" or "kill"—though it more commonly refers to removing someone, such as ejecting a disruptive person from a venue. The number "47" is believed to symbolize Trump, as he is currently campaigning to become the 47th president of the United States.

Following public criticism, Comey deleted the post and issued a clarification:

“I didn’t realize some people associate those numbers with violence. That was never my intention. I oppose violence of any kind, so I took the post down.”

Despite this explanation, the post drew the attention of multiple federal agencies. A spokesperson from the Secret Service stated that they are treating the matter seriously and have opened an investigation in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security.
